The Lady Cardinals softball team added another notch to the win column with a non-conference win over the visiting Kiel Raiders, 7-3. The Cards opened up the scoring in the bottom of the first with Hillary Brummond’s one out single. After Cheslea Jorgensen reached on a fielder’s choice error, she Abbie Mueller singled to load the bases. Brummond scored on a wild pitch, with the other two runners moving up. Kiel knotted the score in the top of the third when Kelsey Theilman reached on an error. Katie Kohlman sacrificed her to second. After the next batter struck out for the second out of the inning, Kayla Sell skied on to deep center for a two-run homerun. Mayville answered right back in the bottom of the third with three runs of their own. Hillary Brummond drew a one-out walk. An infield groundout for the second out moved Brummond to second. Brummond then stole third, followed by an Abbie Mueller walk and advance to second. Ariel Wald then doubled to right center
to drive in Brummond and Mueller. Bethany Hurst followed with a single up the middle to plate Wald. In the fourth, Mayville added two more with a leadoff single by Kasey Swartzmiller. After she stole second, Brummond doubled to drive in Swartzmiller and advanced to third on a Kiel throwing error. With one out, Abbie Mueller towered an RBI sac-fly to center to score Brummond and make the score 7-2. Kiel made one last push with a two-out single in the fifth. The runner advanced to second on a wild pitch, and then scored on an RBI single to right by Kayla Sell. Alyssa Leystra notched her eleventh win of the season, allowing one earned run on five hits, no walks, and a season high 13 strikeouts. Mayville is back to conference play on Tuesday when they travel to Laconia for a 4:30 p.m. game.

Prep softball: Wildcats roll to big softball victory

By Jacey Zembal
Wausau Daily Herald
jzembal@wdhprint.com

EDGAR -- Edgar's Heather Wirkus looks forward to each softball practice and game with the Wildcats.

That wasn't the case for some of the Edgar girls last year as team suffered through a difficult 3-13 season.

The Wildcats have already exceeded last year's win total and added to it Monday with a 6-1 victory over Marathon in Marawood Conference action.

Edgar improved to 5-2 overall and 3-2 in the Marawood, a far cry from last year.

"It's awesome to be winning," said Wirkus, who tripled in the final run in the three-run sixth inning to seal the victory. "It's a huge motivational thing to keep it going. It's good that we can go into each game with our heads held high."

Edgar catcher Stacey Mroczenski finished with two hits and two runs scored, and has been impressed by the turnaround this year.

"We put in extra time during the summer and came in a lot stronger," Mroczenski said. "We have more wins than last year already, and we did the same thing with our basketball season."

The early-inning run support was all pitcher Brittany Myszka needed as she struck out six and walked none to earn the win.

"It is always more fun to win," Edgar coach Judy Nelson said. "They know that Brittany works hard and want to play good defense behind her.

"Our hitters are starting to learn the strike zone, and they know it is hard to adjust to different speeds."

Marathon was one of the top teams in the conference last year, but are off to a slow start as the Raiders rebuild essentially from scratch.

The Wildcats have suddenly become the more experienced team in the rivalry with the Raiders.

The role reversal between the programs wasn't lost on Raiders coach Andy Martin.

"We have inexperience at the varsity level," Martin said. "The girls have to be on their toes all the time, but they are accepting the roles that they have been given."

Betry also went 2 for 4, knocking in two RBI, and struck out 12 while walking one. Teammate Hillary Larson went 1 for 1 with another two RBI.

"I was a little surprised that we only had for hits, but there were a couple of hard-hit errors where we hit the ball pretty hard and some fielders choices that actually moved the runners," Witt-Birn coach Eric Peterson said.

In this battle for first place in the Classic Eight Conference, Brynn Wessberg pitched a gem...missing a perfect game by one KM error. The no-hitter with 12 Ks was Wessberg's first this year and third of her stellar prep career. KM provided plenty of offensive support off previously unbeaten Lisa Dare with 15 hits. Rebecca Brandt continued her hot start with a lead off single and senior second baseman followed with a RBI triple over the centerfielder's head. It was off to the races for KM as they tallied 6 runs in the top of the first. Brandt kept her batting ave. a hair under .600 for the year with 3 hits and 4 RBIs. Senior Catcher Theresa Strand had a big day also with 3 RBIs. Junior right fielder was solid with a 3 for 3 day. Senior third baseman Kara Burac combined a 2 for 3, 2 RBI day with a diving catch of a soft liner to help preserve the no-hitter as did Sarah Leslie. Wessberg attributed her no-hitter to a her defense and a real good curveball that kept the Waukesha North hitter's off balance.
The victory leaves the Lasers all alone in first place with a 5-0 record. This sets up a huge match-up with perennial conference power Milwaukee Pius (4-1) on Thursday.

Young quickly leaves yard
By Citizen Staff
HORICON - Brittany Young took the first pitch Horicon saw over the fence as the Marshladies went on to pummel visiting St. Mary's Springs, 11-2, in Tuesday's soggy Wisconsin Flyway softball game.
"It was out easily," Horicon coach Roger Schliewe said. "We're hitting the ball hard."
Young finished 3-for-4 while Shelby Scharpf went 2-for-3 and tripled. Ellie Torn was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, Sam Davidson drove in two runs and Cindy Justman nearly missed a home run of her own, settling for a double off the top of the fence.
Chelsie Held struck out 13 in picking up the win. She allowed five hits, one walk and no earned runs.
"Chelsie pitched pretty well for the conditions," Schliewe said. "It was pretty yukky but it held off and we got one in."
Horicon (8-2, 6-0 Flyway) heads to Kettle Moraine Lutheran Thursday. Springs is now 4-3 and 3-2.

FOND DU LAC - Nicole Sturtz tied Tuesday's softball game in Waupun with her RBI single and helped turn a game-ending double play as the Warriors took an 8-6 East Central Flyway win at Winnebago Lutheran Academy.
"We ended the game with a nice double play," Waupun coach Tom Hagstrom said. "We bounced back and had some big hits."
Waupun held a 5-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth when the Vikings (6-3, 5-2 ECF) exploded for a six-run frame to take the lead. After Sturtz tied it, the Warriors got the winning runs on WLA's only error of the game.
"It was nice to get out of there with a win," Hagstrom said. "As wet as it was, control was definitely an issue at times for pitchers."
Chelsea Redeker went 2-for-4 with a double. Ariel Griffis struck out six and endured the wet day to pick up the win.

Little Chute aces team up to blank Hortonville batters
By Tim Froberg
Post-Crescent staff writer
LITTLE CHUTE — For much of the last decade, Little Chute's softball team has unsuccessfully searched and schemed for a way to beat Hortonville. First-year Mustangs head coach Nikol Waters unleashed a fresh plan Tuesday to end the one-sided competition. It involved Katie Van Dyn Hoven throwing strikes from the right side and Ashley Schider doing the same from the left. Waters' share-the-load mound strategy worked to perfection. Van Dyn Hoven and Schider combined on a four-hit shutout, allowing the Mustangs to beat the Polar Bears 2-0 in Valley 8 Conference action. Mustangs assistant coach Guy Van Dyn Hoven estimated that it had been at least eight years since Little Chute had beaten Hortonville. "This is so exciting," Katie Van Dyn Hoven said. "We were a little nervous coming into this game because we didn't do too good against them last year. We had been struggling earlier this year, but it feels like we're coming together." Van Dyn Hoven got the start and picked up the win, allowing just two hits and striking out four with one walk in four innings. Schider finished up with three scoreless innings. The combination of the two quality pitchers was good enough to silence Hortonville's usually noisy bats and win a tough matchup against Hortonville ace Courtney Lautenschlager, a hard-throwing senior who scattered five hits and struck out five. "We wanted to have that righty-lefty mix," Waters said. "Just seeing the ball from another side, I think it really throws off hitters a bit."

Roncalli, Two Rivers split pair
By Paul Keup
Herald Times Reporter
TWO RIVERS — No one knew — or would say — if and when the Roncalli High School softball team had beaten rival Two Rivers before this week. But on Tuesday the Jets had already beaten the Raiders once, and they were on the verge of doing it again. After Roncalli scored four runs in the first inning for the second time in a matter of hours, longtime Two Rivers skipper Lee Nebel marched to the mound and had a few words with his team. "I called timeout and tried to get them back in the game," Nebel said. "I told them we were down the same score in the first game, and we came back to tie it. The game is never over until it's over." And these rivals took their time deciding things. Roncalli's Holly Binversie hit a game-winning single in the top of the ninth inning to help the Jets win the opener, 7-6, and then Two Rivers' pitcher Ani Steinhauer got out of a late jam as the Raiders salvaged a split with a 6-5 win in the finale under the lights at Vietnam Veterans Memorial Park. "Both were close games, and that's rivalry stuff," Roncalli head coach Louis Vigue said. "We came in with good experience, and they are a little young. But we knew it was going to be a battle because of the rivalry." The Jets (3-4 overall, 3-3 EWC) scored four in the opening inning of the first game, but the Raiders (2-4, 2-2) rallied to score five in the second. Roncalli regained the lead with two in the fifth, but Two Rivers forced extra innings with a tally in the bottom of the seventh. Binversie's two-out single in the ninth scored catcher Marissa Haug, who reached on an error and took second on a passed ball. Two Rivers had two on with two out in the bottom half, but Jets' second baseman Heather Roberts snagged a line-drive from Chelsie Chada to seal the win. "We didn't want to worry about the rival stuff," Haug said. "We just came in here to win, and we did a pretty good job." The Raiders, meanwhile, were reeling entering the second game. "With the loss, nobody really seemed like they wanted to play, and then we had an error and were down 4-0," said Steinhauer, who retired 12 straight in the finale while allowing just four hits. "But after we started hitting the ball we got back into it, and things came together at the end." Roncalli scored four runs (two earned) in the first inning — prompting Nebel's mound-visit — and the Jets had all the momentum. "We really wanted to get off to a hot start, and it definitely gave us energy," Haug said. "The four runs really helped us to excel." Jets' pitcher Carrie Roberts was the beneficiary of the run-support, but she was winded after pitching 11 straight innings. "She told me she was a little tired and needed a break," said Vigue, who put Ellen Mueller in for the third inning before Roberts returned in the sixth. "Sometimes it can be a timing issue with pitchers in a doubleheader anyway. If they get her timing down, they can hit her pretty well. It worked well for us (with Mueller), but we just didn't score enough runs." But Two Rivers started chipping away at the deficit, and it led 6-4 after the top of the fifth. "The batting brought us back up," said Steinhauer, who along with Chada had RBI-groundouts in the third. "The team had a positive attitude." Haug's RBI-single in the bottom of the fifth pulled the Jets within 6-5, setting up an exciting finish. The Jets were the home team in the finale, and Heather Roberts drew a leadoff walk before advancing to second on a groundout. Haug was up again, and she faced a 1-0 pitch when Steinhauer was called for a balk — setting up runners at first and third with one out. "I'd almost rather not have had the balk there because Marissa has been hitting the ball so well," said Vigue, who watched Haug take second base while Binversie was up. "She might have tied it." But Nebel called a changeup on a 3-2 pitch, and Binversie sent a rocket up the middle. Steinhauer stuck her glove out at the last second and snared the ball. "I was surprised," Steinhauer said. "I saw it coming, and I opened my glove. Most of the time I don't have my eyes open, and it falls into my glove." Another changeup helped the Raiders retire Jets' senior Melanie Holzinger (RBI-single in the first) for the final out. "I'm glad both teams won because there was a lot of competition," Steinhauer said. "We would've preferred to have won both, but it's better to have each team win one. It will keep the rivalry going." And it was a great win in Chada's return from a serious knee injury last fall in volleyball. "She provides great senior leadership, and she really makes a difference," Nebel said. "She never lets (the team) give up." NOTES: Roncalli's Lindsey Balzan was 2-for-5 with two runs scored in the opener, and Binversie finished 2-for-4. … Two Rivers' Stephanie Milmoe went 3-for-5 with three runs, a double, and a walk in the first game. … The Raiders' Rachel Diedrich and Jessica Hrdina each had two hits in the finale. … Two Rivers is 0-2 this season in extra-inning games.

South stuns Southwest

Sheboygan Press staff

A 10-run deficit meant nothing to the Sheboygan South softball team Tuesday.

The Redwings found themselves in a 10-0 hole after the top of the first inning, but fought all the way back to get their first win of the season in a Fox River Valley Conference contest.

Lisa Conrad's walk-off base hit in the ninth inning lifted South to a wild 16-15 win over Green Bay Southwest.

"We just hung in there," South coach Dave Pfeiffer said.

The win was South's first in five games.

Conrad finished the night with three hits and six runs batted in. Alyssa Noltner scored five runs and had three hits.

South finished with 14 hits.

Andrea Spisla was the winning pitcher, allowing eight earned runs and eight walks while striking out four.

Plymouth 8, Kewaskum 7 (12 innings) — Lauren Pieper's one-out single drove in Laura Rortvedt with the game-winner in the bottom of the 12th.

The teams played a doubleheader, but the second game was suspended in the fifth inning because of darkness. Plymouth (7-2, 6-1 Eastern Wisconsin Conference) was leading 9-2. The game will be resumed at a date to be determined.

Lindsey Grahn struck out a school-record 20 batters, breaking the old record of 19 that she set in her last start (an 11-inning outing). She allowed nine hits and seven runs (three earned) and no walks on this day.

Pieper batted 4-for-6 with four RBI. Kewaskum is 5-3 and 2-1 in the EWC.

Oostburg 11, Elkhart Lake 1 (5 innings) — Flying Dutchmen pitcher Hannah Schouten scattered four hits and hit a home run and drove in four at the plate.

Mallory VanTatenhove was 3-for-4 and Katie Kissinger was 3-for-4 with a home run and three runs scored for Oostburg (5-3).

Amy Schwaller was 2-for-2 with a run scored for Elkhart Lake (2-7, 2-4 CLC).

Green Bay West 6, Sheboygan North 1 — The Golden Raiders managed only five hits, four of which came from two girls against the FRVC-leading Wildcats.

Cami Daun took the loss, striking out four w
